The Ruderman Family Foundation believes that inclusion and understanding of all people is essential to a fair and flourishing community. Guided by our Jewish values, we support effective programs, innovative partnerships and a dynamic approach to philanthropy in our core areas of interest: advocating for and advancing the inclusion of people with disabilities throughout the Jewish community; fostering more nuanced understanding of the American Jewish community among Israeli leaders; and engaging in the practice of strategic philanthropy worldwide.
On Inclusion
Our community thrives when we make the fullest and fairest use of each person’s potential. The world cannot afford to exclude anyone. The Jewish community is particularly sensitive to the perils of lost potential. Yet as a society, when we do not fully include individuals with disabilities, we are all poorer for it.
People with disabilities need and deserve the same opportunities as everyone else, and every community needs and deserves their contributions. Inclusion is fair, essential and strengthens us all.
The Ruderman Family Foundation is a global catalyst for organizations and communities striving to improve their capacity for inclusion. With offices in the U.S. (Boston, Massachusetts) and Israel, the Ruderman Family Foundation advocates for, funds, and provides issue expertise to programs and services that fully include people with disabilities.
On Israel-U.S. Dialogue
For decades, the American Jewish Diaspora supported Israel as advocates and funders. Now, as both Israel and the United States rapidly evolve, that relationship is changing, too. Efforts abound to help Americans understand and support contemporary Israel, but Israeli leaders have few resources for gaining nuanced insight into the changing American Jewish community and how those may affect Israel’s future.
Deeper understanding between Israel and the American Jewish Diaspora is essential to a fair, full flourishing of the Jewish community – and is of strategic importance to Israel. Engaging Israeli Knesset (parliament) members from across the Israeli political spectrum in nuanced discovery of the American Jewish community can bring that understanding into the Israeli public dialogue.
The trailblazing Ruderman Fellows Program fosters strategic insight into the evolving American Jewish community among Israeli leaders. The program selects a cohort of Knesset members from across the Israeli political spectrum for concentrated learning with top U.S. community leaders and activists that culminates in an intensive week of briefings in Boston and New York. The Ruderman Fellows can bring this expertise to their Knesset work with colleagues and constituents.
The foundation recently helped launch a Knesset caucus on the issue of US-Israel relations, led by MK Nachman Shai (Labor). Additionally, in partnership with Haifa University, the foundation launched the Ruderman Program for American Jewish Studies, Israel’s first academic program focused on US Jewry.
